"U.S. researchers using laboratory animals are being given an ultimatum by the government: House only mating pairs of each species or do without federal funds.
The new rule has created confusion among researchers that wonder how it will affect them, and has drawn criticism from others who say it infringes on the scientific process and could do more harm than good.
It will affect about $22.2 billion in NIH grants and contracts this year, according to Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Ok), because to date most animals are housed in homosexual-like single-sex pairs.
Coburn said the pledge is a tool the federal government can use to make sure none of its money goes to support a practice he called degrading and debilitating, even for a rat.
'Homosexuality worldwide has always been connected to disease, dehumanization, and organized crime,' Hill said. 'The vast majority of people, globally, find themselves there by choice. Why would we want to support research that forces this lifestyle onto laboratory animals from which we then draw conclusions about heterosexual humans?'"


OK, OK clearly the above modiification was satire. The real article can be found at the SF Chronicle, go click on the link because the article has nothing to do with lab rats. Certainly, the Federal Government can make rules as to how its money is spent. On the other hand, money sometimes has to be spent on giving condoms to prostitutes in order to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS. Clearly, prostititution ain't good, but it could at least be a less dangerous societal ill if health groups are allowed to operate with the greatest flexibility.
