Rich Scientists

This could be just a Boston thing but mentioning I'm a scientist at various places around town over the past few weeks, it seems like there's a stereotype that all scientists take home at least 6 figures.

Most of us do not.

Maybe those of us working for industry do, but in academia that's simply not the case. Granted, the situation my better half and I find ourselves in right now is highly unusual: basically we're moving to the most expensive part of the country in two steps spread out over 8 months. But even under more normal circumstances the best we can say is that we live comfortably, without too much left over at the end of the month.

Is being "rich" a normal stereotype of scientists?
