Huh?
While switching over to brief segments of the Republican debate tonight during Wife Swap commercials, I thought I heard Romney say it's perfectly in accordance with the conservative principle of state's rights that California decided to limit CO2 emissions on cars sold there.
Doesn't he know that state's rights only apply to limiting access to abortions and ensuring the unfettered right to purchase military assault weapons? A subclause of the state's rights principle is that it should never, ever apply to more stringent environmental laws.
Doesn't seem like anyone noticed. Heck, they knew he wasn't serious. Like Bush wasn't serious back in 2000 when he promised to limit CO2 emissions.
Update: A quick glance at conservative commentary this morning would make it appear that John McCain is attempting to force us to get to work in rickety bikes while Mitt Romney is the defender of free-market capitalism. But my man Dave noticed it too:
COOPER: Governor Romney, what did you think of Senator McCain's response? And just to remind you, the original question is do you side with Governor Schwarzenegger or with the Bush administration on this issue?Paging Rush Limbaugh.
ROMNEY: Well, I side with states to be able to make their own regulations with regards to emissions within their own states.
