As far as I remember, Alskan oil was meant to supply only the west coast (the story on npr states that the freighter was heading to Asia).

At a time when gas prices are high and the administration is making the case to open ANWAR to drilling, rather poor from to have that frieghter taking the our crude away from US shores, and rather poor PR to have that one leak oil in the process.
