PLCB deserves to go
From today's Inquirer:
After 72 years of chafing under some of the tightest regulations in the nation, Pennsylvania wine drinkers are suddenly in a heady new world, free to order wine from out-of-state wineries and have it delivered directly to their homes or offices. In any normal state, this would be cause for celebration, not concern.
No visit to a State Store required. No excise taxes to pay. No furtive trip across the state line.
Opposition to direct shipping has come from wholesalers and state liquor-store employees. They cite the loss of the state's ability to control underage drinking and to collect tax revenue, as well as the loss of jobs in State Stores. "I think it's a terrible thing," said Wendell Young 4th, president of Local 1776 of the United Food and Commercial Workers in Plymouth Meeting. The union represents about 2,700 State Store workers, and Local 1776 has about two-thirds of those. "Why should you be able to avoid paying taxes? That's cheating the rest of us."Hold on, cheating? The state haggles with distributors and wineries and determines a price whereby they can profit from resale--that's in effect a tax--then the PLCB slaps an 18% excise tax on top of those profits--that's tax on top of tax (tea parties start coming to mind here)--then a 6% sales tax is added on top of that price--that's a tax on top of a tax on top of a tax. And you talk about cheating?
It's time to stop being fair to the PLCB and start firing their lazy asses.
