Wednesday Wineblogging
It's been a long, long time since we've featured a Wednesday wine, but just for old time's sake, let's give it a go again and see what happens. Tonight's wine is the 2004 Emrich Schönleber Monzinger Riesling Trocken:
In 1834 the German viticulturist Johan Philipp Bronner published his book, "Viniculture in the Provinces of Rheinhessen, the Nahe Valley and the Mosel Valley." About the town of Monzigen he wrote: "The meagre conditions on the Monzinger hill seem, in themselves, to be the cause of the good reputation of the wines, which are, as a result, so high in price and among the best in the Nahe region." The slate and clay soils of Monzingen are perfectly reflected in this Riesling trocken. Hand-harvesting, low yields and pristine cellar conditions are hallmarks of Werner Schönleber, widely regarded to be one of Germany's best winemakers. It was, as Ewald would say, "refrrrresh'ng."
