Palaiologos and Benedict XVI

From what I gather, it's somewhat unclear what the Pope actually said that caused the most recent uproar to appear in news articles around the world. Spiegel has the text...the Pope was quoting the Byzantine emperor Manuel II. Palaiologos who supposedly had a debate with a Persian philosopher that culminated in Palaiologos saying:
Zeig mir doch, was Mohammed Neues gebracht hat und da wirst du nur Schlechtes und Inhumanes finden wie dies, dass er vorgeschrieben hat, den Glauben, den er predigte, durch das Schwert zu verbreiten.
Which is roughly translated as:

"Show me what innovations Mohammed has brought us and all you'll find is the evil and inhumanity of what he proscribed; to spread the faith he preached by the sword."

Update: Here's a complete version of the Pope's speach in English. Quickly scanning that, it's clear there's lots of aspects to it. It was, after all, about Faith and Reason; pretty weighty topics. So on the one hand, muslims are rightfully peaved that the Pope quoted a broadsweeping generalization about their religion made centuries ago by an anti-muslim zealot. On the other hand there's evidence to suggest that though they don't have a Pope-like figure in their religion, that they might use similar descriptions of Christianity. In the face of controversies such as these it's interesting to note that those most likely to call for a muslim Pope-like figure to reign in some of the more inflamatory imams are probably unlikely to take lightly if such a figure were to use similar language to describe Christianity.
